Last week Six-time Paralympic medallist and SMILE founder Stephen Miller MBE treated a Gateshead primary school to a special visit as the search for a winning mascot design for the World Para Athletics Championships and IAAF World Championships London 2017 began. Miller surprised pupils at Emmaville Primary School in Ryton, stopping by to share highlights from his career, showing his medals, and answering questions as well as offering advice and tips to the budding youngsters.
Miller said: “I had a great time with the pupils at Emmaville Primary School. The children were really engaging and asked some great questions. There was a lot of interest in the mascot design competition and I love the idea of one of them potentially becoming part of the Championships in that way.”
The competition, in conjunction with the BBC’s Blue Peter, is open now to children across the country aged between 6 and 15. Competition judges include Paralympic Gold medallist Richard Whitehead MBE and previous World Champion Dame Jess Ennis-Hill. For full details head to the Blue Peter website.
