Earlier this year we started a Partnership with Northumberland Sport to help deliver multi-sport sessions as part of a Satellite Club programme. This clubs aim is to support children and young people with a visual or hearing impairment to be physically active while at the same time offering them a chance to meet other young children with a visual or hearing impairment.
In October we organised an outdoor activity with the aim of providing the children with a variety of experiences using sport and physical activities in an outdoor environment. These activities included team building activities and an orienteering course.
A parent from one of the young children who attended the event had this to say.
‘My son (who is 8) was initially very reluctant to go to the Smile Through Sport sessions, probably, I suspect because he didn’t know what to expect. They let me know that there was going to be a longer session at Druridge Bay Country Park in September to try lots of different sports, so we went. When we arrived the staff were lovely and welcoming. I usually have to stay with him at these sorts of events, however, he was happy to be left with the staff and he spent the next few hours trying a lot of different sports, This was a complete 180 degree change in him and he seemed so happy and confident to be off with the Smile Through Sports staff and other kids. Since then we’ve been to two sessions at Morpeth on Friday evenings and he’s had a blast….he has tried hockey, dodgeball and curling and has loved meeting the other kids, who are all lovely(as are their grown ups!!). Gareth the coach is super and encourages the kids so well to help them develop their sporting skills as well as skills in interacting with others and good sportsperson- ship. In this short time, he has made some new friends, developed skills and his confidence and self esteem are growing due to coming to these sessions. He’s already looking forward to next month’s session, and so am I!! Thank you Smile Through Sport and the Sensory Support Team for organising these sessions- we really appreciate it!!’
Northumberland sport have also produced a case study of these sessions which you can read by clicking below.
If you or anyone you know might benefit from joining in these sessions, as of January they are now running on a monthly basis. Please feel free to pop along and say hello, friends and family welcome.
