Paralympic Torch Visits Gateshead

The lead of our SMILE To Success programme visited Washingwell Primary School to coincide with them hosting the Rio Paralympic Torch Relay.

Stephen Miller, who is going to be competing in Rio, was guest of honour for the afternoon. He spoke to all the year groups about the Paralympic Games and told his incredible stories from his 20 year career. The children also got the opportunity to ask questions and see Stephen’s Paralympic medals. The children were enthralled and Stephen’s tour of the school really built the excitement for the Torch relay to follow.

Washingwell were one of only 100 schools across the country selected to host the Paralympic torch. The relay started in the school before going through the neighboring streets to involve the local community, then ended back in the school. Each torch barer had been specially nominated and these included pupils, parents, staff and volunteers.

It was a wonderful afternoon and really raised the awareness of Paralympic sport
