In partnership with Durham County Cricket Board, the Start to SMILE project delivered our first block of cricket session, then rounding it off with our first friendly cricket tournament.
The project offered six weeks of cricket coaching sessions, from a Durham County Cricket coach, to four groups in the Durham area throughout July and August. The cricket sessions taught participants important skills which would help them take part at the cricket tournament in September. Participants were taught different throwing and catching skills, how to correctly hold the cricket bat and specific batting techniques. Participants learnt how to bowl, learnt different fielding positions and how to work together as a team.
After their cricket coaching sessions, the groups were invited to the Emirates Riverside Ground, County Durham’s Cricket Ground, to compete against one another in SMILE Through Sport’s first cricket tournament. The tournament was a great success with all four teams getting the chance to play three games each. Luckily the rain held off too!! Players created their own team names; All Stars, Durham Dragons, Homes United and The Cobra’s.
There were some fantastic cricket skills on show and great sportsmanship throughout the day. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and loved the opportunity to play on the Emirates Riverside Ground! All players received a medal and certificate for taking part in our first tournament. We hope to continue our partnership with Durham County Cricket Board and look to organise a similar set up for next year, opening it up to more groups and teams to get involved.
