The Start to SMILE project has worked in partnership with Elpha Lodge Care Home and their connected care homes to deliver 8 weeks of multi-sport activities to their residents. The sessions take place at their local community centre in Hadston. The residents had the chance of trying new sports such as Boccia, athletics, cricket, basketball and many more.
On average 17 residents, with a range of disabilities, attended the weekly sessions and thoroughly enjoyed the sessions each week. They especially loved playing volleyball, Boccia and tennis. Elpha Lodge managers, support staff and residents have all seen the benefits and the positive impact the weekly sport sessions and different activities are having on the residents. Their hand eye co-ordination skills have improved, their accuracy and precision skills are improving each week and they’re confidence has increased when it comes to trying new sports and skills.
The residents have enjoyed the sessions that much that they’ve requested the sport sessions to continue on a regular basis covering the cost of the sessions themselves. This is one of many fantastic success stories that has come about as a result of the project and Sport England funding. We are looking forward to continuing our work with such an enthusiastic group of individuals.
If you think that your residents could benefit from such sport opportunities, get in touch to organise your block of 8 weeks. Contact Jenni on 07710 891 741 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
